Matthew Baker’s talk is called Diarrhea and Dodgy Doners – What’s Special About Bacteria.
Matthew is a PhD Student at Oxford University who is originally from Australia. He studies the Bacterial Flagellar Motor and is really interested in how this nanoscale rotary electric motor generates the torque which drives bacteria to swim.
He is also a Slam Poet who has performed in big slams in Australia and is slated to participate in the upcoming UK All-Star Slam at the Cheltenham Literature Festival. Through a program called FameLab, a competition to find the best new science presenters in the UK, Matthew was able to revisit poetry and rap to present science. Since then, he has performed at festivals such as the Green Man Festival as part of the Einstein’s Garden stage.
